Administering Competencies

This article is mainly focused for admins of Silverbucket.

Competency management in Silverbucket has two main purposes:
  • Adding competencies to people
  • Adding competency requirements to unassigned role memberships on projects
→ Together these two allow you to find the most suitable person for your project

Adding new competencies and editing / deleting existing competencies can be done by any admin in the environment. The tool for this is located in the ADMIN menu under 'Competencies':


Categories

Categories can be used to group multiple competencies and certifications in one basket. You can categorise any way you want and create as many categories as you wish.
The Categories tab shows the full competency and certification hierarchy as an expandable tree. Each item type has its own visual treatment so you can tell at a glance what you're looking at:

  • Category — folder icon, white background
  • Competency — tag icon, blue background; badge shows how many users hold it
  • Certification — award icon, yellow background; badge shows how many users hold it
  • User under a competency — user icon, warm grey background; badge shows their proficiency level
  • User under a certification — user icon, warm grey background; badge shows their expiry date (if applicable)
Click any user's name to jump straight to their full record in the Users tab. Use the Open all groups button at the top to expand the entire tree at once; click it again to collapse everything.


Competencies

In this view you can add/edit/delete competencies. By clicking 'Add Competency' you can create brand new competencies. You can use the Free Text Search and Category filters to only see relevant results in the view. A separate Certificates tab is available for managing certifications — see Certifications for details.


Levels

Levels view lists every current competency level group created in Silverbucket. If you have only one category created, that level scale will apply to every single competency in Silverbucket. If you wish to edit it, simply click on the three dots on the right to enter editing mode. You can drag and drop the levels in the editing view to have the desired outcome.
You can also tie specific Competency Level Groups to specific categories. This is handy when you wish to have multiple scales in Silverbucket at the same time; for example:

Certificates with two levels 1,2 (No/Yes)
Skills with three levels 1,2,3 (Beginner, Intermediate, Senior)


Users

You can also manage users' competencies here in the admin panel. You can search for the desired person in the dropdown list and adjust their competencies and competency levels.

You can also manage users' competencies straight from their Person Dashboard by heading to the COMPETENCIES tab.


Target Expertise for Competencies

You also have an option to show the "desired level" of a certain competency - also known as 'Target Expertise' in Silverbucket. Target Expertise is considered the user's desired level of a certain competency. Target Expertise can be enabled in the  System Settings⁠ .
