Administering competencies

This article is mainly focused for admins of Silverbucket.

Competency management in Silverbucket has two main purposes:
  • Adding competencies to people and competency requirements to unassigned roles
  • Finding a talent with matching competencies

Other main features include filtering persons with competencies, adding competencies to categories, creating a hierarchy from categories and defining the level of competency when adding competencies to a person.

Adding new competencies and editing / deleting existing competencies can be done by any admin in the environment. The tool for this is located in the ADMIN menu under Competencies:

In the admin view choose 'Competencies'.

1) Manage Categories
Categories can be used to group multiple competencies under one header; you can categorize any way you want and you can create as many categories as you wish.

In the editing view you can:
  • Edit the name of the category
  • Edit the hierarchy level of the category
  • Tie it to a certain organization; by using this you make those competencies more relevant to a certain organization. This category's competencies are moved higher up in listings for the people in selected organization.
  • Competency level group; you can dictate what sort of levels this category uses; competency level groups can be created under the LEVELS header.

2) Manage Competencies
In this view you can manage single competencies. By clicking 'Add Competency' you can create brand new competencies.

You can use the Free Text Search and Category filters to only see relevant results in the view.

3) Manage Levels
Levels view lists every current level found in the system. If you have only one category created, that level scale will apply to every single competency in Silverbucket. If you wish to edit it, simply click on the three dots on the right to enter editing mode. You can drag and drop the levels in the editing view to have the desired outcome with the levels.

You can also tie specific Competency Level Groups to specific categories. This is handy when you wish to have multiple scales in Silverbucket at the same time; for example:

Certificates with two levels 1,2 (No/Yes)
Skills with three levels 1,2,3 (Beginner, Intermediate, Senior)

4) Manage Users
You can also manage users' competencies in the admin panel. You can search for the desired person in the dropdown list and rapidly adjust their competencies and competency levels.

You can also manage user's competencies straight from their Person's Dashboard, which is a more commonly used practice. Remember to toggle the 'Competencies' area visible from top-right corner!

5) Managing the 'Target Expertise' for competencies
You also have an option to show the "desired level" of a certain competency - also known as 'Target Expertise' in Silverbucket. Target Expertise is considered the user's desired level of a certain competency.

Target Expertise can be enabled through the admin-view's System Settings in the Old UI:
